The Exchange came in to being in 1970 after founder, Mr. Hussain Alfardan realized that working hours made it impossible for the many expatriates working at the distant Dukhan Oil facility to reach Doha in time to carry out financial transactions at the country’s banks. In establishing the Exchange, Mr. Hussein Alfardan identified three areas in the service provided by the existing banks, could be improved through a well established exchange house that would be open after bank closing hours; it would offer more competitive exchange rates than the banks; and the queuing, that had become customary at Qatar\s banks, would be eliminated by the provision of a more efficient service. Thus a small beginning was made in 1970.

The effect of this policy was to create an institution which was an immediate success, and which now handles foreign currency exchange, issue drafts with corresponding banks throughout the world, is involved in gold trading, and which has also accumulated an impressive portfolio and a series of investments.The present President of the Exchange, Mr. Fahad H. Alfardan, underwent training in every aspect of the Exchange’s business before taking up his current post, and followed the foot steps of his father, Mr. Hussain Alfardan.He played a major role in expanding the business introducing such innovative concepts as the “one minute customer” through windows in which people are served and transactions concluded in less than sixty seconds, a challenge that required the introduction of a state-of-the-art computer system. Now the customers are happy that Alfardan exchange has become one stop shop for the financial needs.
