Representatives from Alfardan Automobiles showcased the engineering innovation of the BMW i8 during a lecture and technical presentation at Texas A&M University at Qatar in Education City on 28th February.
Bilal Abbas, Training Manager at Alfardan Automobiles, the official importer of BMW Group in Qatar, commented, “The Innovation Behind the BMW i8,” to a crowd of students, faculty and staff, followed by a live demonstration of three BMW i8 cars.
The i8, BMW’s first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, aims to provide more driving pleasure while using less fuel, combining the characteristics of a purebred sports car with the fuel consumption of a compact car.
During his presentation, Abbas talked about the state-of-the-art engineering behind BMW’s flagship hybrid sports car, the i8. The presentation focused on the holistic approach undertaken by BMW to build a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle from the ground up that uniquely blends premium design and sustainability. Not only is the car low on emissions, but even its frame is primarily composed of recyclable carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic — all of which is assembled in a hydroelectric factory.
After the lecture, interested students and faculty got to tour the cars in person. Engineers from Alfardan Automobiles were available to answer questions and showcase the cars’ functions.
Texas A&M at Qatar’s Office of Development, Engagement and Outreach organized the event to highlight the importance of innovation in engineering to help drive the economy in Qatar as it strives to achieve the goals of its ambitious Qatar National Vision 2030.
Texas A&M at Qatar dean Dr. César O. Malavé said, “The BMW i represents innovation, inspiration and imagination. At Texas A&M at Qatar, we aim to instill in all our students a passion for innovation and design, and a drive to continually improve the world around us. We are fortunate that our friends at Alfardan Automobiles have chosen to showcase this exciting new vehicle on our campus to inspire our students.”
